U3A COLLAGE
Japanese artists began to stick paper onto silk as early as the 1100’s. Paper collage was first recorded in Europe in 1400’s. Victorian photo collage suggests techniques were practiced in the early 1860’s.
Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque used collage as a method for creating innovative art. They came up with the name “collage” from the French verb “coller” which means “to glue” or “to stick”.
Collage is thought by many to have revolutionised modern art.

Our Volunteers are our treasures!
Our leaders and presenters take time and care to manage their courses and presentations for our enjoyment.
Our Reception Volunteers, led by Mary Heinemann, are the important link between U3A and the general community, and they do this well.
Our caterers, led by Fairlie Nassau, provide delicious fare for us for a variety of occasions and do most of the related housework!
Margaret Hay has taken on the role of office Administrator so very successfully, at a time of significant change in U3A Stonnington. U3A continues to run smoothly under Margaret’s lead despite the tragic death of Denise Nadebaum and ongoing changes in office volunteers due to family matters, illness and travel. I am most grateful to Margaret, and to the rest of her team.
The members of the Committee of Management work as an effective team and give me good support.
In the early days of COVID, Peter Ward had the foresight to introduce Zoom to U3A, keeping us functional over many months. Zoom now provides the benefit of hybrid sessions. Peter was also instrumental our adoption of the U-MAS administration program – also a necessity due to COVID. Throughout all of this he has managed our AV equipment, patient instruction of users, and installation of a system with more straightforward management than previously, and usually with a great outcome. His contributions are greatly appreciated.
Our membership has grown throughout 2024 to 451. Energy, ideas and advertising provided by Cheryl Fairclough, our Secretary, have undoubtedly contributed to this, and other successes. Thank you, Cheryl.
Other members do small but important things – from washing the tea towels, to watering the memorial tree. I believe that volunteering enhances the feeling of belonging to U3A.
When I recall this past year at U3A, I recall time with friends, mind-opening presentations and discussions, new members, walks and visits, social occasions – what a privilege!
I wish you the very best of health and happiness for this festive season, and the New Year. I am looking forward to seeing you in 2025.
Kind regards, Elizabeth

Latest Newsletter from the President
Our Summer break is moving fast – I feel that I will be back into my ‘normal routine’ with U3A Stonnington in full action again. It will be so good to catch up with friends and acquaintances. I hope that you are all well.
Make the most of our program!
Overlooked something interesting? Enrol in it now.
We have a number of interesting new additions to our program. Check the program again on U-MAS, or the printed copy that is available at Reception or on the veranda. If find something in which you are interested, but have not enrolled in, you can do so on U-MAS or office volunteers will help you.
I am thoroughly enjoying the books for “Home Grown Aussie Crime” discussion. A mind expanding selection!
Our Treasure Trove of recorded presentations
As you will be aware most of our presentation have been recorded. These are listed on our website under ‘Courses and Activities’. They are password protected – ask at Reception for the password.
In fact, our Website is also a treasure – please check it out: https://u3astonnington.org.au/
Do you know someone who would like to give a talk at U3A – a family member? Friend? Yourself?
Please let me know – planning for the Semester 2 timetable has already begun.
A return to pre-Covid hospitality
Social gatherings have been gradually returning at U3A Stonnington. Action to promote these opportunities now includes some scheduled gatherings, and provision of biscuits as well as tea and coffee. If you would like to offer a hand at gatherings or do some shopping (reimbursed), or even just wash the tea towels, let me, or someone in the office know.
Walks, Visits and an Excursion
These are very popular activities – a lovely way to get spend time with a friend, and to get to know others. Walk leaders from the past have left a generous legacy of notes that can be used by someone else. Do you enjoy walking? Consider leading a walk.
Group visits were introduced in Semester 2 last year, and are popular – if there is a place or event that you would like to visit, so might others. Please contact me about leading a walk or having a U3A visit.
There will be one excursion in each Semester, details to be announced.
Volunteering at U3A Stonnington… MORE…
Our Volunteers get to know not only about the organisation, but to meet others and make new friends – and have the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile. There are tasks small and large that need to be done for the smooth running of U3A. Please get in touch with me or one of the Office volunteers.
I hope that we can all have a most enjoyable time together at U3A Stonnington this year!
Best wishes, Elizabeth

Congratulations Professor Louis Roler AM!
We are delighted to see that Professor Louis Roller was recognised with a King’s Birthday Honour – Member (AM), General Division.
We have first-hand experience of Louis’ contribution to community, education and pharmacy with his many hours – over many years – of mind expanding, meticulously prepared, interesting lectures about our health and medicines. All presented with humour. Always reliable, and patient when things don’t work.
We treasure the contribution that Louis makes to not only U3A Stonnington, but also to the wider community of Pharmacy and therefore all of us.
Warmest Congratulations indeed, Professor Louis Roller AM!

Saving a life using a Defibrillator
Stonnington council has installed an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in the U3A Stonnington building because it can greatly improve outcomes if used quickly following cardiac arrest.
Simple and safe to use, the following short videos may help you save someones life. In emergencies requiring a defibrillator also call Triple-Zero emergency services. The “Performing CPR Correctly” video improves understanding and application of CPR.
Other first aid techniques may be required.
The videos are recommended by St John Ambulance.
